be sure to use a null cable.
As a datapoint, my sun 13w3 adapter does work on my Onyx.
David's suggestion is a good one; many Indys turned into headless web
servers.

You might try pulling the graphics adapters out, unplugging the
keyboard, and hooking up a serial console.
