You wouldn't believe the variation in captioning standards. For
example, modern online film is now captioned in SMPTE 2052, (SMPTE-TT)
or TTML, yet another hypertext HTML subset.
A lot of details are kept confidential (lots of money involved).
I believe that EIA/CEA-708 is used for modern (DTV) content.
Again, I have no idea what PAL broadcasts used.
