Maybe. But we have three of the Expedit shelves (we use them for books and
yarn stash, mostly) and they're remarkably sturdy for IKEA stuff. They did
a pretty good job on the structural integrity front, and the result of their
hollow construction is that they're also light enough to move reasonably
easily by yourself.
Going back to your original statement: they do use real wood in quite a few
of their products. Unfortunately, it's usually pine, and not particularly
good pine at that. We have a chest of drawers where I reattached the drawer
faceplate with a number of 3" deck screws after the third time I had to
return it because their own fasteners were stripping out of the front.
