I guess one passable reason is that I don't want
to use 8k for a
monitor, although I could always program alternative monitors in 1 or 2k
segments and select with a switch.
So whilst 4 x 2716 chips are sufficient, allowing for spares etc, I
wasn't intending to use them all on the same board.

P.S. on checking on E-Bay UK 2764s seem quite expensive compared to
2732's...
Last ime I looked, 27C64s were very easy to get from the normal component
suppliers and quire cheap. I've used them in preference to smaller
devices (like 2716s() because thgey were cheap and easy to get. Perhaps
things have changed now.
