As Tony has pointed out, one needn't, and probably
shouldn't,
put the batteries near anything important. I've laid the board
out like Steve's prototype, with the circuitry near the edge
connectors, and the battery near the handles. If that's not
far enough away, then there is Tony's suggestion of a cable
and a box :-).
It it were going in my system [1]. that I wouldn't want to do even that.
In the 8/e. the boards go in vertically, with the handles at the top. So
a leaking battery could drip down the board and into the backplane. I
would vertianly fit the battery remotely.
[1] It won't be, for the simple reason I have the full 32K words of core
in mine.
