McMaster-Carr is still a little on the high side for these. A wholesale screw supplier
should probably be charging ~$4.00-4.50 for these at qty 100, and less for qty 500 and
above. McMaster-Carr has the convenience factor working for them though, and I've
ordered tons of stuff from them in the past just because they had it available whereas one
of my wholesalers would have to bring it in.
Exactly. It's the same reason I order from Digi-Key for a lot of my
personal projects; I'm paying a tax for convenience (and the fact
that I can't get anywhere near the volume that a real distributor
would need to give me a good price anyway).
That said, I almost never need anything from McMaster-Carr anyway...
generally I go to them when I need raw material like Lexan sheets,
though I could probably get them cheaper elsewhere.
