Oh, I forgot to mention that when I opened it up,
there was a REALLY long
CRT (I'd say more than 1.5 feet) that ran the entire length of the
cabinet.
That's standard on analog oscilliscopes (vs. digital sampling scopes).
They have to use electrostatic deflection because it is much faster than
the electromagnetic deflection used in conventional monitors. The
inductance of the coils to generate the electromagnetic field inherently
prevents rapid deflection changes. However, electrostatic deflection is
more limited in the achievable deflection angle, so a longer tube is
required.
High-end vector graphic display systems used electrostatic deflection, but
medium and low-end systems such as the DEC GT40 and the various coin-op
games use electromagnetic.
