What about using the small backlight bulbs and
inverters used in laptop computers? The inverters have
on/off control and sometimes dimming and the bulbs are
available in many lengths.
I've seen similar tubes sold (new) for 'case modding'. And also the
inverter modules to power them. Mind you, I'd not want to pay for enough
to make a clock display!
