Ok, my mind is still blown. How does a light-pen
drawing program work
then? (Or is a light-pen drawing program not possible?)

The closest thing I've seen to a drawing program on the DEC VT11/VR17
combination was the RACAL-REDAC circuit board cad program.
This would IIRC take two points and draw the vector between them and
you could rubber-band stretch it around once the end points were in
place.
