I may be naive, but I understand that the satellite was owned by
a connecticut company who was have it launched to replace the one
which went bad earlier this year, knocking out millions of pagers,

Nope. Wrong. It was a spy satellite. Years ago, most spy satellites
were launched from Vandenburg but more and more of them are being launched
from KSC. It's supposed to take a year or more to
replace the failed
communications satellite. They've moved some some others
around in their
orbits to provide temporary coverage for the failed one.
