There was one _big_ advantage to Radio Shack machines (at least for me).
You could get documentation. Real documetation with schematics and
pinouts and the like. No hassle -- just walk into the shop and buy the
technical manual off the shelf.
Commodore and Amigas also had the schematics available. I was able to fix
a problem on my Amiga 500 with the help of the schematics. I believe the
chip I replaced was a 74LS which was in between a joystick port and one of the
big custom chips.
