No, these truly looked just like a three lead NE2. The leads
were inline. The center was the anode and the two outer ones were
cathodes. It worked similar to the dekatron shown, although these
use two transfer cathode electrodes between each digit. When biased right,
only the right or the left cathode could be lit. One could steer
which was lit by pulsing each. These stored state.
As a note on the dekatron, these were used in some of the early
HP counters. They were used as the first, or highest frequency,
state of the counters. They were quite fast!
