Call it idle
speculation, but what's the highest speed a
consumer-grade audio modem can manage over VoIP, state of the art or
otherwise? Has anyone tried this?
You probably won't get _that_ much since
I'm pretty sure the
compression algorithms use tricks like psychoacoustic models (hello,
mp3) which aren't going to be so good with modems.
Some of them do, but nothing requires using such compression
algorithms! Indeed, nothing requires using compression of any sort.
$DAYJOB's VoI offerings, for example, are normally configured to not
compress (except to the extent that u-law sample representation can be
viewed as compression).
