Seconded. No excuse for it in this day and age with
just about everyone
having access to locally supported mail hosts they can use for outgoing
mail. Open relays serve no purpose except to be abused.
Every single time I've heard a sendmail newbie (or any mail admin wannabe)
saying "oh, but, an open relay is the only way to solve THIS particular
problem".... it's turned out that the admin was totally unaware of the
facilities built into the software (or the engineering of the entire mail
infrastructure) that handle doing exactly what was desired, without opening
up relaying. An open relay is a clear indicator of one of two things:
ignorance, or malicious intent.
