Surely you can improvise, just screw the metal bracket to a piece of
flat wooden surface (e.g. leftovers from IKEA bookcases). I also find
that its easier if you start with a very thin bit to drill a guide hole.
An automatic center punch is inexpensive and pretty much foolproof.
Slides in some cases are a problem. I've mounted a couple of extra floppy
drives in a Toshiba Inifinia case using strips of oak in place of the
factory slides. Sure, it's not authentic, but who's going to see?
