About ten years ago, at the school, we had a lab full of 386's, that
worked just fine for a learning (non-production) environment.
You don't NEED, nor even WANT, a fast machine for LEARNING sort
algorithms, etc. There were enough that there was hardly ever a wait to
use a machine.
One of our administrators wanted to TRADE ALL of the PCs for 3 or 4 486
machines. We barely managed to stop him.
One day, our department chair came running into the lab, more excited than
we had ever seen her before. She said that we were going to be getting
SUNs!! She had just heard that the administration was getting us some
"multimedia workstations"! (And, in her mind, that equated with Sun.)
The big day arrived, and in came three large boxes clearly labelled
"multimedia workstation", that were about 3' x 6' by 1'.
The "multimedia workstations' that we got were fancy computer desk/carts.
