The manual for the TI programmer describes the battery
pack (BP8) as
nickel-cadmium; when I checked my (dead) battery pack, there appear to be
multiple cylindrical 'cells' within the pack itself, but there is no
mention of the voltage rating and - since my pack is no longer functional

Odd, my TI Programmer has the clip to connect directly to a 9V battery.
Maybe a later production run?
For the cells, those are plain 1.2V NiCad ones, I replaced them myself
on a pack from another calculator from TI.
I also have the one which does not use the red led 7 segments but a green
plasma display
