I had plenty of non-Hayes-compatible modems - Ventel comes to mind (it
was targeted for the dumb terminal crowd, not the
personal-computer-BBSer)... I think the model I had did *not* include
a dialer (it was an external accessory).
Or did you mean Hayes vs Hayes clones?

I believe the reason it didn't work on some modems is that Hayes had a
patent on the use of an escape sequence (+++) with guard time.
