ImageMagick might also be an option given that the images are scanned -
I think it can just pull all the pages out of a pdf file and convert
them to individual tiff images.

You have Acrobat Reader for Linux, haven't you? I struggled along with
xpdf for a bit, but it crawls along when dealing with scans.
