In all of this discussion, I'm surprised that no one's mentioned the
LMC555, a CMOS version of the original bipolar part. Much better
I am pretty sure I mentioend the 7555, which is another CMOS version.
It has many advantages (including the fact it doesn';t put an almighty
glitch onthe supply line when it switches), but it may be a little more
'fragile' than the bipoler one. Without checking, I am not sure of its
output current specification either, the bipolar 555 can drive quite
heavy load.
