Except for
"clean" steel, which is hard to get. A lot of it
came from the German ships scuttled after WWI (in Scapa Flow).
There's some other sources out there, like the German U-Boats
scuttled after WWII, but before the first detonation of the
atomic bomb.
I know that the ships the German's sunk at anchorage at Scapa
Flow were a favorite source for steel used in various instruments due
to the lack of radioactive contamination in the steel, but is any
steel still recovered from them? It was quite a large portion of the
German fleet that was imprisoned there. Fascinating story for those
that have never heard it.
I think the German fleet in Scapa Flow is about mined out.
