...and it's hard to say what the old one contained (i.e., just a
couple of capacitors and inductors or more than that?).
Since you've got the real estate, I'd also check the input to the PSU
to see if any MOVs are onboard. If not, you might want to add a
couple in the extra space you've got. Cheap protection against
surges.
