Personally, I recently aquired a DM-III motherboard for that very purpose.
I also removed the chip carefully enough to install a socket in the
motherboard. The board is safe on the shelf as a spare for my *working*
DM-III. The chip is with me, installed in an SBC-6120.
Chip removal is not a crime. Butchering classic boards is another matter
entirely.
