Forgive my ignorance, I was just a kid at the time, but weren't the
lunar landers abandoned to crash-land on the moon after the trip was
over? So is this stuff from prototypes or am I missing something?

Consider this, the Aerospace Museum in DC has a Space Lab. BTW, if you want
to do the Space Lap walkthrough I recommend going during the week in
February. I lived in DC for three years, and that's about the only time
you'll be able to see it without standing in line for ages. As for Summer
on a weekend, well you can just forget going to the museums period!
