It can indeed. I've run X on Suns with 16M. It's a little painful,
but usable. 32M is enough to be fully usable, I find.
This is without bloat. No KDE, Gnome, GNU Emacs, OpenGL, smoothed
fonts, translucency, Xt, Xinerama, anything - it probably helps that
I've written fairly minimalist versions of enough X clients that
everything on my screen comes from one of my own clients: terminal
emulator, clock, window manager, security front-end, picture
displayer....
It's also X11R6.4 patchlevel 3, not "modern" X.
