Intertec (Superbrain) called their format "QUAD
density" when they
went to double sided on their MFM 48 tpi.
So, then when they came out with a 2 sided MFM 96 tpi format (720K),
since they had used up the name QUAD, they called it "SUPER density",
which they abbreviated "SD"!
Smoke Signal Broadcasting used to refer to this as 'Octo-density'.
