Believe it or not, the most common use of keeping keystrokes was for employee evaluation.
I remember weekly postings of graphs of "keystrokes/hour" in data entry and word
processing departments, with a weekly "prize" [nominal value] for the
"best" data entry operator of the week.
This and similar productivity measurement measures were not uncommon.
