Well, as of yesterday, Sony is planning to stop
production of floppy
disks. Apparently, other companies will still make them, but I'm sure its
only a matter of time....

The "beginning of the end" for floppies happened a long time ago.
Like when Apple stopped including a floppy drive in iMacs (remember
all the screaming in PC quarters about how they were still important?)
Personally, in the past 8 years, I've only used floppies at work for
BIOS upgrades. Prior to that, it was for Linux and Win98 installs
where I couldn't boot a CD-ROM directly.
They will always be important for vintage gear (I still have and use
8" floppies), but unlike how paper tape was still available (due to
CNCs) once it wasn't used daily with computers anymore, it might be
harder to find certain varieties of floppy media 20 years from now.
