I've had exactly the
same problem as the restr of you -- only one pin for one drive select
on the board, so only one floppy where I need (at least) two. And the
BIOS behaved once it saw there were two floppies there.
If you've got an ISA slot (current Optiplexes do not), better to get an aftermarket
ISA floppy card that supports high density, rather than the original PC-XT version, which
will not support the high density 1.44/1.2 media. There were many such cards, most with
their own BIOS support (you can probably disable that if the card is well-behaved).
