On a slightly different topic, has anyone thought about
doing
something similar to a BBS, but on a larger scale? A UUCP network,
for instance? Not as large or full of garbage as the internet these
days, but not as local as a BBS...
That was basically the idea behind FIDOnet, GT-PowerNet and
the various other BBS networks. Even the GT-Power network had quite a
few shared message bases and the full FIDOnet backbone was pretty
considerable in size. Does anyone know how many message bases
FIDOnet carried at it's peak? I remember that when my board was up,
Mike Focke published his monthly BBS list and it showed over 800
boards in the metro-DC area at one point. Quite a lot of them were
connected to one or more of the networks though there were also a of
them run by students and weren't interconnected with anyone else.
