While looking for the actually hardware, you can play
with the software in
emulators. There are several good ones, the best is a PDP-8/e emulator for
the Macintosh that even includes frontpanel emulation.

Actually, the best is Doug Jones's PDP-8 for Unix/Xwindows
which is where the Mac one comes from...
It does a 640x480 X frontpanel that lets you even single step the CPU.
