I like the beefiness of XLR--I've used them for power supply (low
voltage DC) connectors. They come in 3, 4, 5 and 6 pin versions.
I think I've seen a 7 pin version in a catalogue...
There is also a related maisn conencotr with fully shrouded pins on both
parts. It is nto approved for doemstic use in the UK, apparently the
problem is that it is locking, so if you trip over the cable it won't
unplug. But captive, wired-in cables are OK. Go figure....
Fortuantely, such 'domestic' regulations don't apply to homebrew stuff...
