Assuming that you could keep the correct clearance, I imagine that a
moder GMR head might do the trick. The gotcha, of course, is
"maintaining correct clearance".
I'd heard about 3M using a colloidal iron suspension (e.g. visamag,
magnasee, kyread) and scanning the disk surface with a laser.
I imagine that a setup using a CD read head might do the trick, but I
doubt that the work that went into the setup would pay for itself.
