I remember watching "The Nanny" just because of the captioning. That captioner was brilliant, he/she must have been pretty good at text book enligsh but unfamiliar with idioms and pop culture references. He would make up is own jokes when he didn't understand why the audience laughed. And sometimes just do a literal translation if the result was wierd/funny enough.
