Either way... OUCH. I remember $2k as well, but that was also from 2006
when we were looking into PCI as well, so it's not surprising that it's
somewhat inflated now.
Yeah, the $3.5k/2 years just allows you to use the USB logo on top of
paying for the VID. You can't use the logo in advertising or on the device
itself unless you're a member of the USB-IF. You can however label the
interface with plain text "USB" without paying that IIRC. Seems like it
would be pretty dumb to buy the VID outright when you can pay $4k, be able
to use the logo (at least for the two years) and get a "free" VID for $1000
less.
