additional advantage of AVR is the range from tiny 8 pin devices to
fat QFP packages with up to a few 100 kB RAM + a few kB of EEPROM and
all sorts of IO. (PWM, CAN, USB, ADC, I2C, ...) So you can replace
anything below ARM with a single architekture.
I will add AVR to that list when I have some time to
check it out.
