I have one of my Raspberries doing exactly that:
- mp3 archive is mounted via NFS over OpenVPN-over-WLAN
- mpd (Music Player Daemon) is used to play - which has a ton
of different frontends, so I can even control it from my phone ;-)
- an external USB-Audio device takes care of the sound output due to
the problems of the Raspberry Pi line out
Works just fine ;-)
