I don't mind it all that much...EXCEPT...
(1) I don't trust them to get the "write the new one then switch" logic
right to avoid trashing things in case of power-offs while writing.
(2) I *really* dislike systems that do this without having a hardware
facility to disable writes - such as a pair of jumper pins which must
be jumpered to write. (If software can do it, rogue software can do
it.)
I suppose real computers have a separate service processor for this kind of
thing, so it's easy to put things right even if something does go wrong (plus
of course the update can *only* be done from the service processor - not from
some rogue code running on the main CPU)
