Don't feel too bad about it. I once spent a few hours trying to figure
out why a PSU wasn't giving any outputs, only to discover the cartdige
fuse in the (normal, 13A, BS1363) mains plug was missing. A new fuse held
and the machine worked fine after that...

A worse version of that (and yes, I've done it) is to solder all the
wires onto one of those invernal circular mil-spec connectors and then
realise you've forgotten to put the back shell over the cable....
