I've actually found that a a torch on one side of the board and
a pair of pliers on the other is an excellent way of removing many
components, no soldering iron involved, since the torch makes it
easy to heat all the pins of an IC or connector simultaneously.
Of course, the board doesn't end up in such good shape...
