One can get an inkling of this by watching a few episodes of
"Antiques Road Show" on PBS (the UK claims the daddy of the series).
Watch the furniture guys ooh and ahh over the dirty, worn, scratched-
up, cracked finish on an old table--and watch them hold their
collective nose at a table that has an immaculate, newly-applied
polyurethane finish.
I wonder if there will ever be a market for artificially "distressed"
vintage computer gear? I've got some furniture made about 40 years
ago that was so treated.
