When it comes to modifying, it sure would be handy if it were available in
"standard" sizes. 2x4 is NOT 2x4, and has changed MANY times.
When the second section of my house was added on in 1919, the size of the
studs was not an exact match. And the pieces used for the additions in
the 1950s are very different in size.
Even a sheet of 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch plywood is getting hard to find. It
has only shrunk about 1/32?, but that is still enough to get in the way of
mixing old and new.
