Of course, I would not want to do much non-business
programming in
COBOL. None, actually, so that would make it a bad choice.
Tangent, and I agree with you about desires, but I did once write a
COBOL FD parser in COBOL. If the goal is to make it last 30 years,
the desirability of the language may be secondary.
