There was some work that I heard about indirectly that was going on
at NASA. I don't know what they decided on. The two that I know of
that were being used by one data recovery service was AWSTAPE and an
extended SIMH .tap with error recovery information added, that I was
never able to get a detailed description of.
Google searches are incredibly noisy because of all the "we lost the
Apollo 11" tape and "Lunar Orbiter tapes found in abandoned McDonalds"
nonsense, and the dominance of audio and telemetry tape archiving.
