As others have noted, a dynamotor is a different animal.
It's my understanding (and experience) that RPCs are fine for driving
3-phase motors. In fact, the more motors on the load, the better the
phase balance.
However, if you're using non-motor equipment, where any phase does not
carry the same load as any other phase, RPCs suffer badly, unless WAY
overspec-ed for the load.
A good place to pick up a cheap 3-phase motor is a rewinding service.
They often have spares that they'll sell for very reasonable prices.
