That's already the case in a lot of things. I'm no longer surprised how
much "recent" digital audio equipment I look at turns out to be an 8-bit
host CPU to handle the knobs and MIDI, a horking great FPGA or DSP chip,
some flash and an off-the-shelf DAC.
One synth I have could be used as a vocoder by replacing just its
firmware ROM (Redsound DarkStar).
