I thought the RS232 spec required that you cna conenct
any pin (even
an ouptu) to any valid RS232 voltage level without damaging anything,
even if the device is powered down.
It's been a while, but I think what the spec says is that you can short
together any combination or combinations of pins indefinitely without
damage. I don't recall anything about connecting them to low-impedance
external voltage sources, though of course my recollection of something
I got through ILL for about a week twenty years ago is hardly
authoritative. :)
