TMAH? Nasty stuff--and it's a strong base too, not an acid. I know that
it's used to strip PCB resist, but that's not what we're after here. I
can't think of any particular advantage it may have to the problem at hand
other than being corrosive, toxic and stinky,

It's not particularly toxic or corrosive. It stings a bit on your
hands, but not all that much. It removes oxidation very easily too, and
without much concentration.
