even on generic hardware, is fast.  [...]  But List still sequential processing as
far as I can see?  How do you
 speed that up? 
Just as sequential as C or PL/I or whatever else.

As for speeding it up?  As a compiler geek I'm strictly a dilettante,
so I don't really know, but I would imagine you'd do it much the way
you would optimize any other language.
