Actual voltage was the same, or rated voltage marked on the wallwart
was the same? There's a huge difference between the two.

You lose.
Explanation #1: The wallwart or the device you plugged it into failed
for other reasons (eg, a small scrap of something conductive fell into
it), synchronously with your switching wallwarts.
Explanation #2: The device is (well, was) picky about its input voltage
and you switched from a regulated wallwart to an unregulated wallwart;
see the previous discussion about how unreg wallwarts' output voltage
varies.
Explanation #3: You made a mistake when checking voltage and polarity
(eg, you checked a wallwart other than the one actually used).
